Revision as of 17:12, 5 July 2017
The 2017 Northeast / New England Meetup MapRaid will begin on July 9th 2017 at 09:00 EDT, with a dedicated half hours session, and then continue informally for one week through July 16th 2017 at 23:59 EDT. The raid will be divided into 4 groups, with group assignments to be determined at the meetup.
MapRaid Goals
The raid is short and the area is large. We don't expect to complete all these goals for the entire area, however these are items that can be worked on throughout the raid area listed here in order of importance. The primary goal of the Meetup Raid are to make Waze route properly in the Upstate NY region by working on these items:
- Ensure turns are enabled and confirmed along these routes.
- Update incorrect road type classifications,
- Correct state and county route names to standard, and
These tasks can often be completed in tandem. While updating state route or county route names, their road type classification can be updated and their turns confirmed. Note: In some urban areas, there may be roads requiring FC upgrades that are not state or county routes.
The secondary goal is to spruce up the area and polish it. This will make the app more useful, and hopefully encourage more local usage. This includes any of the following tasks:
- Update hospitals from
to
category,
- Add and confirm speed limits,
- Update gas stations, and
- Complete general basemap confirmation and cleanup.
If you are unsure what to focus on, please contact your Group Leader.

Local Guidance
In addition to the guidance listed below, please see the New York Wazeopedia page for additional information and the full set of state editing standards.
NY Route Name Variations
- New York State uses NY-## and NY-##X for all state routes and their spurs, loops, etc. (e.g. NY-27, NY-17M)
- For County Routes, CR-## and CR-##X are used (CR-1 or CR-21B)
- County route primary names vary from county to county. The primary name should match the LGS and not the country route (blue) shield. CR-XX from the route shield should be used as an alternate name. Some counties will use only CR-XX on their LGS, in which case that is the primary name and no alternate name is necessary. Please consult the county route inventory sheets for naming, but ensure they match LGS as well.
- Highway name descriptors, such as TRUCK, EXPRESS, etc. should be added in ALL CAPS after the name. (e.g. US-1 TRUCK, or on a concurrent road US-1 TRUCK / US-9 TRUCK)
Functional Classification
Tip: for editors using the FC Color Highlights script: These colors will more-or-less match the NYS DOT FC map:
NYS FC Type | Highlight Color |
---|---|
Interstate = Fwy | black |
Principal Arterial = MH | green |
Minor Arterial = mH | red |
Collector = PS | blue |
Ramp | #8c6946 (unclassified) |
NY Minimum Road Lock Standard
Minimum Road Lock Standard | ||
---|---|---|
Segment Type | Lock | |
Freeway | 5 | |
Ramp | Highest Rank of Connected Segment | |
Major Highway | 3 | |
Minor Highway | 3 | |
Primary Street | 1 (Auto) | |
Street Private Road |
1 (Auto) | |
|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| | 2 | |
• • • • Ferry • • • • | 5 |
Note that these are minimum lock levels. Certain segments may be at higher lock levels for protection or due to old standards. If you find a road locked to a higher level than its minimum, please consult a senior editor to determine whether to leave it locked at that level or if its level can be lowered. NYC has a different locking standard, but this area will not be included in the MapRaid.

Recommended Tools for the Meetup Raid
New editors should be aware there are many scripts and extensions that editors use to assist with editing that not only make some jobs easier, but verifies what we do is correct. The use of these scripts is highly encouraged and those listed below are the ones you should install, at a minimum, to get started.
TamperMonkey / GreaseMonkey
The most common and supported browser is Chrome with Firefox a close second. Install the appropriate one for your browser. This is needed to install other scripts.
Validator
This script validates a map area in Waze Map Editor, highlights issues, and generates a very detailed report with wiki references and how-tos.
Temporary Fix to Get Validator Working
Once you have installed Validator, you will need to install the following script into Tampermonkey:
Then you will need to set it to Position #1:
- Go To Tampermonkey Dashboard
- Click Installed Userscripts Tab
- Click On Waze Map Editor - Validator Fix
- Click On Settings
- Set Position to #1
- Hard Refresh in WME
Install WME Validator Localization for New York script to add three additional NY-specific permalinks. More information can be found on this page.
Toolbox
Meetup MapRaid Overlay
This overlay script (requires TamperMonkey / GreaseMonkey) displays the boundaries of each raid group. It also adds a label to the map describing which group and county you are currently viewing in the editor. (Credit: Joyriding)
Place Browser
Use the MeetUp MapRaid! Northeast 2017 Place Browser to review and fix all places. Areas are broken down by group and county. This tool lists all places in the specified area, and flags some things that MIGHT be problems. It is up to you to decide what to do with this information. Be sure to apply the global, national, and local guidelines for places. Be sure to click the About tab to get an overview of the tool. (Credit: Joyriding)
Other Recommended Scripts
- If you are working on places, install WME Closest Segment . It helps you determine the closest segment to the navigation stop point of a place. A line is drawn from a selected place (for point places) or its navigation point (for area places) to the nearest segment.
- WME Junction Angle Info . This script helps with junction maintenance. If two connected segments are selected, it shows the turn angle, and estimates navigation instructions. Otherwise it shows the the angle between each segment.
- WME Simple Permalink. Shortens WME permalinks by removing any layer and filter specifications.
- Place Harmonizer (WMEPH). Harmonizes, formats and locks a selected place. Also for Chains, please Submit New Chain Data for any that are not in the database. NOTE: Now Available for all editors, including R1!
- When working with House Numbers (HN), please use this script by JustinS83. It highlights un-nudged house numbers. WME HN Tool (JustinS83 fork)
- Edit Count Monitor will add a counter to the top "blue" bar. This script will show you how many edits you have and will also turn Yellow for a warning, and Red to alert you if you are being throttled.
