Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)
In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. FC-based upgrades have been completed in Northern New Jersey to the best of our knowledge. In Southern New Jersey, all Freeway and Major Highway are set correctly. Most minor Highway are set correctly, but some roads that should be primary street might not be set correctly. If you find roads that seem to need to be reclassified, please consult your group leader.
In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type.

We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:
In New Jersey, all roads with a numbered marker of any type are colloquially referred to as Routes, regardless of whether any particular route has been built into something that resembles a true highway or not. We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:
* Federal: I-195 E, US-9
* Federal: I-195 E, US-9
* State: SR-35 S, SR-72
* State: SR-35 S, SR-72
* County: CR-537, CR-4
* County: CR-537, CR-4
When a segment has more than one name and/or more than one route designation, name it in a way that will be most useful to the wazer listening to navigational instructions. This means using the name that appears on the most frequently encountered signs. If the name on the signs changes very frequently, keep it consistent by using the most consistently-used name. If both the name and the route designation consistently appear on the same sign, use the name.All other names/route designations should be entered as alternate names. You can read more about this in Concurrent names on US roads.
If a road has more than one name follow the standard for Concurrent names on US roads.

For more information on correct names and road types, please see Mapping resources below.

Be sure to read about New Jersey's unique jughandle system. Left turn? Right lane exit. U-turn? Right lane exit. Right lane exit ramp? Fuhggedaboudit! It might be a street, and it might be unlabeled. If you are looking at a divided highway that is not an access controlled freeway, then you need to know about Jughandles.
On most of New Jersey's major divided roads with at-grade intersections, direct U- and left turns are prohibited. PLEASE DO NOT ENABLE THEM! Instead, a freeway-interchange-style connector, called a jughandle, is provided along the right side of the road, either before or after the intersection, to facilitate right, left, U-turns, or any combination thereof. Even though they are constructed at grade, we map them with the Ramp type to keep the segment name (often found on freeway-exit-style BGS). Please do not change their road types.

Important!

Please read the entire NJ MapRaid wiki. If you are still uncertain what to do about something you see on the map, please ask your group leader Thank You for your help with the map.

Mapraid UR Rules

We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 3 days.

Do not close URs if the UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [MESSAGE].

Do Not Mass-Edit

DO NOT perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. We utilize many micro doglegs throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions. You need to zoom in very close to see these micro-doglegs.

Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)

In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:

 • Federal: I-195 E, US-9
 • State: SR-35 S, SR-72
 • County: CR-537, CR-4

If a road has more than one name follow the standard for Concurrent names on US roads.

Locking Standards

In New Jersey we have a set minimum standard for locking roads based on segment type. Any road of a certain segment type must be locked at least to the rank (level) in the chart below. Roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, imaging inaccuracies, and the like), but should not be locked lower.

A great time to implement these locks is while bringing the road types of an area into compliance with the current US road type standards (FC and highway systems). Lock the roads based on type after they've been set to current US road type standards.

New Jersey Minimum Locking Rank Standard
Segment Type Statewide
 Freeway  5
 Ramp  Highest rank of connected segments
 Major Highway  3
 Minor Highway  3
 Primary Street  1 (Auto)
 Street  1 (Auto)
 Private Road  1 (Auto)
 • • • • Ferry • • • •   5
 |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|  2

Note: Do Not Mass Edit just to update locks to these standards, these can be adjusted as you find them while editing other aspects of the segments such as FC, speed limits, naming, etc.

Some segments still warrant higher locks and care should be taken when setting segment lock to these standards to look for and protect these special setups with higher locks. Some examples; segments which are part of BDP, U-turn prevention, or using micro-doglegs, or other complex intersection setups.

These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available.

 • Complex places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at Level 4.
 • Gas stations should be locked at Level 4

(but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in.)

Places

For more information on Places editing in New Jersey, please read New Jersey - Places.

Un-signaled Left Turns

Left turns are allowed wherever they are not expressly prohibited (see below). It is OK to turn left over a double-yellow line into a driveway or private road or parking lot. Double-yellow lines are generally interrupted at a public street where a left turn is permitted.

Left turns are prohibited when:

 • a posted sign prohibits the left turn
 • there are two double yellow lines Sometimes, there is a raised median or diagonal striping between.This is often seen in the form of the "bubble" prior to a dedicated left turn lane,
 • there is a dedicated left turn lane in the main road, not counting a bi-directional "suicide" center turn lane.

Jughandles

Be sure to read about New Jersey's unique jughandle system. Left turn? Right lane exit. U-turn? Right lane exit. Right lane exit ramp? Fuhggedaboudit! It might be a street, and it might be unlabeled. If you are looking at a divided highway that is not an access controlled freeway, then you need to know about Jughandles.

Cameras

Please remove all cameras. No mercy.

Rest area

There are fair number of rest areas in New Jersey. All rest areas should follow the same naming guideline: Examples:

 • Rest Area - I-77 mile 45 Beckley Travel Plaza
 • Rest Area (no facilities) - I-75 S mile 15 (Scenic View)
 • Rest Area - I-65 S Alabama Welcome Center

The rule is: Rest Area {([vehicle type] only, no facilities)} - [highway] {direction} mile [mile] {Rest Area unique name} {([special type])}

You can read more about this at US Rest area place naming guidelines

MapRaid Promotions

Some editors really let their bright side out, and let their community skills shine. This is even more evident in a concerted group effort with high-density editing like a MapRaid!. Editors of all ranks working closely with each other and the Champs, really lets us everyone get to know each other, and allows certain editors to be recognized for their skills and effort.

When the Champs see someone consistently editing well, interacting well with the community, and knowledgeable of the various details from the Wiki, they can issue promotions. This can be anything from the size of a managed area, to a rank increase, or even a new role.

The following editors did above and beyond during NJ MapRaid. The reward/promotion wasn't only because what they did during the NJ MR but what they did leading up to the NJ MR. Congratulations!
