Welcome to the NJ - Jersey Shore MapRaid!
The map raid commenced on 27 May 2015 at 19:00 UTC (3:00 EDT).

remove everything up to and including the next ">" to remove that "under construction" message.
The group will be divided into nine teams, one for each section. Each group will have both local and senior editors, one of which will be the "Group leader" - listed in blue below. Please direct all questions to your group leaders. The raid hosts will be available across all areas for added support.

-->We're heading down to the shore early this season. MapRaid New Jersey May 2015 will be 27 May 2015 through 3 June 2015. This map raid region is affectionately known as "The Shore" in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Salt air, cool summer breezes and endless boardwalk amusements for young and old bring visitors from the northeastern United States and Canada.  Wintertime population is a little over a million, but summertime population is eight to ten times that. Let's raid the map to help Wazers find their favorite places and find better ways to get to them this summer and every summer!<br style="clear: left;"/>

Mapraid UR Rules
Mapraid UR Rules
We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 4 days.
We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 3 days.

Some URs are meant to stay open for a while.  Please contact the editor working on them before closing.  Some examples are:
* The UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [xxx]. Unless -- it is a [CLOSURE] that has already passed. The URO+ extension makes it easy to spot these
** Very old [CLOSURE] URs might be ripe for closure -- check carefully.
* The UR contains a request from the editor not to close it.
* There is clearly communication going on between the reporter and one or more editors.

Please Do Not Mass-Edit
Do not perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. Specifically, avoid the Select Entire Street button completely. Doing so makes it difficult to tell who fixed what parts of the map to solve different URs. While we recognize that sometimes a solution might involve fixing a road name over an entire section of road or dividing/undividing it, for example, we ask that you defer these updates toward the end of the raid.

Level 5,6 Locks
Level 5 and 6 locks usually indicate that an unorthodox treatment to the map for those segments was necessary. They are also used for Freeway segments that we believe are accurate and up-to-date with the best information available at the current time. Please check with local editors before making any changes to these segments. Consider use WME Color Highlights or WME Toolbox extensions to highlight L5- and L6-locked segments.

Micro-Doglegs
Do not close URs if the UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [MESSAGE].

We utilize these extensively throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions based on the driving experience approaching many junctions, regardless of the angle any road might depart at. Be sure to zoom in really close at each junction where there might be a question about its geometry or routing to check for a micro-dogleg.
Do Not Mass-Edit
Local Guidance
DO NOT perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once.
We utilize many micro doglegs throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions. You need to zoom in very close to see these micro-doglegs.

Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)
Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)
In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. FC-based upgrades have been completed in Northern New Jersey to the best of our knowledge. In Southern New Jersey, all Freeway and Major Highway are set correctly. Most minor Highway are set correctly, but some roads that should be primary street might not be set correctly. If you find roads that seem to need to be reclassified, please consult your group leader.
In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type.

We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:
In New Jersey, all roads with a numbered marker of any type are colloquially referred to as Routes, regardless of whether any particular route has been built into something that resembles a true highway or not. We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:
* Federal: I-195 E, US-9
* Federal: I-195 E, US-9
* State: SR-35 S, SR-72
* State: SR-35 S, SR-72
* County: CR-537, CR-4
* County: CR-537, CR-4
When a segment has more than one name and/or more than one route designation, name it in a way that will be most useful to the wazer listening to navigational instructions. This means using the name that appears on the most frequently encountered signs. If the name on the signs changes very frequently, keep it consistant by using the most consistantly-used name. If both the name and the route designation consistantly appear on the same sign, use the name.All other names/route designations should be entered as alternate names. You can read more about this in Concurrent names on US roads.
If a road has more than one name follow the standard for Concurrent names on US roads.

For more information on correct names and road types, please see Mapping resources below.

Locking Standards
Locking Standards
These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Higher level locks can be used in exceptional circumstances. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available. If the road should be locked above your editing level, be sure to request an appropriate lock. For more information, please see New Jersey Major Roads.
These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available.

Construction
There are various road projects constantly going on all over New Jersey. Many long-term projects on bigger roads can be found on the state website 511-NJ. These projects are typically submitted as road closures for their expected duration and marked with the tagged URs containing [CLOSURE] or [CONSTRUCTION] tags.

Other projects involve short term closures on more local roads - in the order of hours or days - and without concrete schedule, so we cannot manage those in WME. For such claims, we simply remind the reporter of the Closure reporting functionality of the Waze app.
* Complex places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at Level 4.

* Gas stations should be locked at Level 4<br />
Cities and Towns
(but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in.)
Please do not change any city names during this raid. If fixing a city name is necessary to solve a UR, please ask.

We are aware that city names on many segements are incorrect. A complex hierarchy of "city". Municipal, Census-designated places, and postal names is used and misused. We are working with Waze on a better solution than the one currently available, and as a result, we ask that you do not change any city names during this raid.

Places
Places
* Complex, intricate, or otherwise critical Places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at least to Level 4.
* Gas stations and other types of places fundamental to the functionality of the Waze app should also be locked at least to Level 4, but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in. Remember to ask locals for information about places they know.
* Editors below Level 4 should request a lock when identifying information is completed.
For more information on Places editing in New Jersey, please read New Jersey - Places.

Jughandles
Jughandles
Be sure to read about New Jersey's unique jughandle system. Left turn? Right lane exit. U-turn? Right lane exit. Right lane exit ramp? Fuhggedaboudit! It might be a street, and it might be unlabeled. If you are looking at a divided highway that is not an access controlled freeway, then you need to know about Jughandles.
On most of New Jersey's major divided roads with at-grade intersections, direct U- and left turns are prohibited. PLEASE DO NOT ENABLE THEM! Instead, a freeway-interchange-style connector, called a jughandle, is provided along the right side of the road, either before or after the intersection, to facilitate right, left, U-turns, or any combination thereof. Even though they are constructed at grade, we map them with the Ramp type to keep the segment name (often found on freeway-exit-style BGS). Please do not change their road types.

Please read more about New Jersey's unique jughandle system.

Toll Roads
On New Jersey's toll roads, only segments where tolls are actually collected should be checked as toll roads. This is especially important on the state's partially-tolled roads, like the Garden State Pkwy or Atlantic City Expy, where it is actually and legitimately possible to travel between certain interchanges in certain directions toll-free.

Roads do not get divided for dedicated electronic (EZ-Pass in New Jersey) toll lanes, unless necessary for some other navigational interest. This is because Waze has no way of telling whether you have an EZ-Pass transponder, and we certainly don't want Waze telling drivers without a transponder to use such toll lanes because traffic is slightly faster there; it is both prohibited and fines can be assessed using automated technology.

High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes are not utilized anywhere in New Jersey.

Cameras
Cameras
Please remove all cameras. This is a top priority for this raid.
Please remove all cameras. No mercy.

A pilot program recently ended for red light cameras at select intersections throughout the state, as authorized by the state. Current law requires all red light cameras to be turned off and signage indicating their presence to be removed.

Mobile units / signs that measure and display speed are not speed cameras and should not be added to the waze map.

Further information about cameras in New Jersey can be found here.

Alleys
Alleys
Info can be found here.
The Parking Lot road type is used for alleys in New Jersey. In general, alleys are only added to the map if they are named or if any destinations must be reached from the alley rather than from the main road. If an alley is added make sure any Waze places are closest to the street where Waze should put the stop point. If an address is on a main street, but the correct stop point is on the alley, do not use a HN -- it can only be used for a stop point on the street to which it belongs. Use a residential place point instead.  Watch out for Google address and place pins that might be too close to the wrong segment.

Further information about alleys can be found here.

Mapraid UR Rules

We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 3 days.

Do not close URs if the UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [MESSAGE].

Do Not Mass-Edit

DO NOT perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. We utilize many micro doglegs throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions. You need to zoom in very close to see these micro-doglegs.

Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)

In New Jersey, we follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. We distinguish the 3 different types of routes found in the state as follows:

 • Federal: I-195 E, US-9
 • State: SR-35 S, SR-72
 • County: CR-537, CR-4

If a road has more than one name follow the standard for Concurrent names on US roads.

Locking Standards

In New Jersey we have a set minimum standard for locking roads based on segment type. Any road of a certain segment type must be locked at least to the rank (level) in the chart below. Roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, imaging inaccuracies, and the like), but should not be locked lower.

A great time to implement these locks is while bringing the road types of an area into compliance with the current US road type standards (FC and highway systems). Lock the roads based on type after they've been set to current US road type standards.

New Jersey Minimum Locking Rank Standard
Segment Type Statewide
 Freeway  5
 Ramp  Highest rank of connected segments
 Major Highway  3
 Minor Highway  3
 Primary Street  1 (Auto)
 Street  1 (Auto)
 Private Road  1 (Auto)
 • • • • Ferry • • • •   5
 |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|  2

Note: Do Not Mass Edit just to update locks to these standards, these can be adjusted as you find them while editing other aspects of the segments such as FC, speed limits, naming, etc.

Some segments still warrant higher locks and care should be taken when setting segment lock to these standards to look for and protect these special setups with higher locks. Some examples; segments which are part of BDP, U-turn prevention, or using micro-doglegs, or other complex intersection setups.

These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available.

 • Complex places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at Level 4.
 • Gas stations should be locked at Level 4

(but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in.)

Places

For more information on Places editing in New Jersey, please read New Jersey - Places.

Un-signaled Left Turns

Left turns are allowed wherever they are not expressly prohibited (see below). It is OK to turn left over a double-yellow line into a driveway or private road or parking lot. Double-yellow lines are generally interrupted at a public street where a left turn is permitted.

Left turns are prohibited when:

 • a posted sign prohibits the left turn
 • there are two double yellow lines Sometimes, there is a raised median or diagonal striping between.This is often seen in the form of the "bubble" prior to a dedicated left turn lane,
 • there is a dedicated left turn lane in the main road, not counting a bi-directional "suicide" center turn lane.

Cameras

Please remove all cameras. No mercy.

Alleys

Info can be found here.

Rest area

There are fair number of rest areas in New Jersey. All rest areas should follow the same naming guideline: Examples:

 • Rest Area - I-77 mile 45 Beckley Travel Plaza
 • Rest Area (no facilities) - I-75 S mile 15 (Scenic View)
 • Rest Area - I-65 S Alabama Welcome Center

The rule is: Rest Area {([vehicle type] only, no facilities)} - [highway] {direction} mile [mile] {Rest Area unique name} {([special type])}

You can read more about this at US Rest area place naming guidelines

MapRaid Promotions

Some editors really let their bright side out, and let their community skills shine. This is even more evident in a concerted group effort with high-density editing like a MapRaid!. Editors of all ranks working closely with each other and the Champs, really lets us everyone get to know each other, and allows certain editors to be recognized for their skills and effort.

When the Champs see someone consistently editing well, interacting well with the community, and knowledgeable of the various details from the Wiki, they can issue promotions. This can be anything from the size of a managed area, to a rank increase, or even a new role.

The following editors did above and beyond during NJ MapRaid. The reward/promotion wasn't only because what they did during the NJ MR but what they did leading up to the NJ MR. Congratulations!
