This new page is currently undergoing modifications. The information presented should be considered a draft, not yet ready for use. Content is being prepared by one or more users. Do not make any changes before you post a message in this forum.

Introduction

CommonState is a part of the Testing region, which includes the states and/or territories of:

XXXX / YYYY.

Mapping resources

Before editing the maps in CommonState, be sure to fully review and understand the editing manual.

The Waze user community follows the Waze etiquette guidelines discussed in the Wiki. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these guiding principals while editing the maps and this Wiki, as well as when communicating with other Waze users.

The following links can be helpful when editing the maps in CommonState.

Add some generic USA mapping links while waiting for local editors to populate the page.

Cities and towns

What is the primary goal of this section? Are there states with cities that are unnamed? Or is this more about when and how to name CDPs? Either way we should explain why this section is here since we are not just listing city names for the sake of listing them. One example is Connecticut/Cities and towns.

The Pennsylvania#Cities_and_towns page lists a number of interesting points (some may not be completely correct for all states) that we may want to consider making generic for all states.

I see MA has some additional specific guidelines for this section that make sense for MA, so that is a good example for having this section.

There are 169 cities and towns in the state. See CommonState/Cities and towns for proper naming information.

Duplicate cities can be caused by incorrectly named segments and should be corrected following the guidelines in the smudged city article.

Major roads

The state specific page for Roads by type (third link below) does not appear to be active for most states and would be removed for states that don't have it. One example is Connecticut/Roads by type.

PA has two detailed sections on road naming that we may want to consider to include parts or links (Pennsylvania#Standard_abbreviations and Pennsylvania#Major_roads

Texas has a subsection on road naming that might be better in the subpage (link 3) below.

Texas has FC information in this section. I recommend we keep it in the to do list section on a unique page.

CommonState follows the general road naming and type guidelines of the USA. See Road names/USA, Road types/USA and CommonState/Roads by type.

Places

If a state has specific guidelines different from the rest of the country, it would be noted here. Currently Texas has a complete list of Places noting when they should be points or areas. This deviation from the rest of the USA is being discussed in the forums. If it is decided to be kept, the sheer size of that table may suggest it be moved to a subpage of Texas and linked to this section.

Texas notes that some parts of a military base are approved for labeling as a place. If this is generally accepted it should be moved to the Places page (unless unique to Texas).

CommonState follows the USA standard for Places. It is recommended that the guidelines in that page are not deviated unless first discussed in the state forum linked on this page.

Major construction projects

Some states have a full subpage on tracking construction projects and others just link to the state's DOT.gov page.

When managing a section of roadway under construction or being closed for a major event, follow the Wiki guidelines on construction zones and Real time closures.

The Federal Highway Administration keeps a website indexing all states that can provide highway and construction project information. Go to the page, find your state, and check the links for the desired information.

Special roads

This appears to be more of a list of editing manual page links. There are others like the Junction Style Guide and the linked pages inside it that we might want to reference as well.

PA includes a note on Pennsylvania#Alleys that is specific to the state. I added the general Alley link for other states to use the general form. Currently it is part of the Parking Lot Road section, so we might want to consider creating a small section on Alleys to identify why there are some states that differ.

Texas has a section on Military bases that I recommend we simply add as a link in the blow list and add whatever is necessary on that page.

CommonState follows the standard USA guidelines for all of the following special road types.

Non-drivable roads

Is this generally universal for all states? Can we link to the one page in the Wiki and only list deviations here? Note that some states like CT incorrectly guide editors NOT to map any of the non-drivable road types.

Review the guidelines for non-drivable roads to ensure compliance with the general guidelines.

Cameras

Because many states are different from each other, this section is very important to be covered uniquely for each state.

The Texas page has a recommendation for how cameras should be entered from the client. I would recommend we move that recommendation into the camera page and make it universal for all camera placement locations.

Not every camera-looking device at an intersection is a speed or red light camera. Generally speaking:

  • a speed camera takes a photograph of a vehicle when it passes by the camera at too high a speed.
  • a red light camera takes a photograph of a vehicle that enters an intersection after the light is red. In some areas, it takes the photograph when a vehicle is not clear of the intersection some period after the light turns red.

Be sure to know your cameras before accepting new camera reports.

When adding a camera, be sure to review the camera placement recommendations.

Laws regarding speed and red light cameras vary between the states and territories, so be sure to understand the details of camera legality in CommonState.

Based on information researched at the time this page was created, Waze editors have not determined the legality of red light or speed cameras in CommonState.

No other camera types should be mapped in Waze.

Speed cameras

Speed cameras are (legal/illegal) in CommonState. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle when it passes by at too high a speed. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.

Red light cameras

Red light cameras are (legal/illegal) in CommonState. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle that enters an intersection after the light is red. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.

To do list

Some states have it and others don't. I recommend we always make it an entire subpage. The subpage would then break out the different types of to do lists like places, FC updates, etc. That allows this page to stay clean and consistent and we could also have a general to do link for each state from a single USA page if needed.

If you are an active editor in this state, consider reviewing the "to do" list for the state at CommonState/To do list.

Area Managers

The table below identifies the editors also designated as Area Managers or higher who are editing in CommonState. If you have any questions, please consider contacting them directly as needed. If you are an Area Manager that covers CommonState, or a USA Country Manager that does a lot of work in CommonState, please add yourself to this list (alphabetical by username) in the correct rank section.

The editor who also serves as the Regional Coordinator for CommonState is automatically listed at the top of the table. That editor may not be highly active in this state and therefore may not be listed separately in the table.

This Area Manager table is a placeholder and has not yet been entered for CommonState. Check the Waze CommonState forum if you would like to help get it started. Once that is done this link will create the initial table automatically.
