Waze does not expect or want Lane Guidance to be applied to every available junction with multiple lanes.

Junctions that benefit from Lane Guidance

Lane Guidance can only be added to segments that have more than one exit direction.

Junctions that should not use Lane Guidance

Lane Guidance can not be added to roundabouts. For Lane Guidance to work through a Junction Box all turns must be allowed within the junction box and routes controlled solely by the Junction Box.

Lane Guidance should never be used when a single lane is used for all directions, nor should Lane Guidance ever contain more lanes than are available to the user.

Adding Lane Guidance

  1. Select the segment
  2. Click on the Lanes tab
  3. Click Add lane guidance for the appropriate direction of travel (you may only see 1 option)
  4. Change the number of lanes to match the road layout (in the direction of travel only) at the point of the exit node
  • The choice of Lane Guidance turns shown for each segment is determined by the angle of the exit segments, snapping to the nearest 45 degree angle
  • This is not the same angles as used for verbal instructions, using the JAI script will help but is not always correct for Lanes. Example: Straight on (not instruction); Verbal: ±45 degrees from straight, Lanes: ±22.5 degrees from straight.
  • Select the lane check box(es) that apply for each of the generated turns
    • You can override the suggested lane guidance directions by clicking on the arrow image on the

Disabling a turn with Lane Guidance will delete all store information, if the same turn is re-enabled in future Lane Guidance will need to be input again.

Changing the angle of junction segments that already have Lane Guidance may lead to issues with how Lane Guidance is displayed in the app. It is advised to add a Map Comment to junctions that include Lane Guidance

    H / # Junction mapping

For H or # junctions that are mapped at 90 degrees, have parallel segments, and have a median segment of 30m or less, Waze will combine Lane Guidance, using a heuristic approach, to give the appropriate images depending on the direction of the route through the junction. The Lane Guidance should be mapped in sections through the junction as shown below:

    1. Map the lanes for the approaching segment
    2. Map the lanes for the first median segment
    3. Map the lanes for the second median segment (if required)

It is not possible to select a u-turn lane option, this is created automatically by the system.

    Removing Lane Guidance

To remove Lane Guidance, simply select the lanes tab for the segment, then edit lane guidance, then change the number of lanes to zero (0).
