WELCOME
Welcome to the Alabama and north Florida MapRaid! We appreciate whatever your contribution will be, whether many edits to the map or just a few. Each and every one moves us one step forward and improves the quality of the map.
This MapRaid (MR), like others, is bringing editors together from across the community, pooling all efforts onto a specific area within our region for a short and focussed burst of editing activity. How is this done? All participants will be granted the ability to edit within the complete MR area for the duration of the raid. Each of you will be attached to a raid group with an assigned geographical area pulled from the entire MR area and given a list of editing priorities. It will be your task to work with your group to help address those objectives!
MISSION & PRIORITIES
The primary goal for this MapRaid is to update as many places as possible and to resolve any existing place-based issues with the map. We want to continue to provide the best possible experience for all Wazers as they negotiate their way through the Southeast region (SER) and beyond. So, finding a place in search (with complete and accurate business / entity details) and arriving at its location in a timely and accurate manner is extremely important!
The editing priorities are:
- Place Point (PP) & Area Place (AP),
- Place Update Request (PUR),
- Residential Place Point (RPP),
- Parking Lot Road (PLR),
- House Numbers (HNs),
- Map Problem (MP), and,
- Parking Lot Area (PLA). (Please work after priorities 1 thru 5 have been addressed.)
SER follows the guidelines outlined in the national or USA wiki. Any exceptions or variations to that guidance can be found in the Southeast Region (SER) wiki. We have prepared this MapRaid wiki to help highlight what these differences are. We also review here those editing situations where SER further defines what the acceptable practice is. Finally, some of the information has been included to emphasize what is needed so we can reach our raid goals.
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something, please consult with your group leaders.

RAID AREA
Interactive map: groups on Google Maps
COMMUNICATION
The Southeast region (SER) uses Discord's platform for its regional communications between editors. For this MapRaid, all group communications will also be made there, in the Waze "Southeast" Discord server in channels within the "SER MAP RAID" category.
Discord Channels
Each raid group has its own channel for their specific communication needs. We have also provided a general channel for conversations among all editors. All Unlocks/Uplocks will be done in your Group Channel.
The channel layout follows:
- Group 0 - Chat : channel for all map raid participants to hang out and discuss whatever they want.
- Group 1 - Mobile
- Group 2 - Pensacola
- Group 3 - Dothan/PC
- Group 4 - Montgomery
- Group 5 - B’Ham
- Group 6 - Florence
- Group 7 - Tuscaloosa
- Group 8 - H’Ville
Requesting Assistance in Discord
SER has a specific format or shorthand editors use when asking for help. Since many raiders are familiar with this, we suggest you try it as it is a quick, effective way to communicate your needs.
- Change in lock level (Unlock/Down-lock & Lock/Up-lock). Only one request is needed to get an unlock for a place (or segment) that will require to be re-locked when you are finished. (See below for further instructions.)
Current Level -> Desired Level, City, State Planned Edits (Purpose) Permalink (PL) REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED
- PUR approval or rejection:
Desired Lock Level, City, State PUR Action Requested Permalink (PL) REAL LIFE EXAMPLE NEEDED
- Editor Responses to requests. An editor can be signal what he's done by attaching the appropriate emoticon to the Discord post:

WME EDITING BASICS
WORKING ON THIS DIALOG: MR wiki; USA wiki; SER wiki there are very helpful links in the section below.....
Native Language
- Review your settings and preferences by clicking on the gear icon. Verify that the Language is set to US English. (This ensures, among other things, that the correct set of category names is available when editing Places.)
Map Layers
These map layers should be enabled when editing:
- Map Comments (Display Section)
- Live Users (Display Section)
Editor Visibility
- While editing in the raid area, please make yourself visible to other editors.
- Enable the Live users layer so you can see other editors in your vicinity.
Rank-based Editing Restrictions
Level 1 and Level 2 editor map editing restrictions remain in effect during the raid.
PLACE EDITING GUIDANCE
SER follows the USA Places guidance Southeast Region guidance.
Places NOT mapped
Any places from this list which are mapped (despite this guidance) are locked to a minimum of level 5.
Ex: There are some rivers mapped as requested by Waze staff.
- interchanges/junctions
- water of any kind
- islands
- beaches
- toll plazas
Mapping Style - Area or Point
Places in the following categories are mapped as indicated [either as an area (AP) or a point (PP)] in exception to national guidance: https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Places#When_to_use_area_or_point
Place type | Mapping Style | Place type | Mapping Style | |
---|---|---|---|---|
City Hall | Area Place | Campground | Point Place | |
Government | Area Place | Car Dealership | Point Place | |
Library | Area Place | RV Park | Point Place | |
Museum | Area Place | |||
Post Office | Area Place | |||
Sports Court | Area Place |
- Most APs are mapped as basic polygons reflecting the building footprint.
- APs consisting of multi-building campuses, e.g. schools & universities, are mapped as one large polygon inclusive of all parcel boundaries.
- Gas stations are mapped to the fenceline or parcel boundaries.
Place Marker & Entry Point Locations
WORKING ON THIS DIALOG: Ensure the Place marker is in the correct spot. Verify an entry point (if present) is anchored to the correct location on a segment for optimal routing.

Name.
Name the business/entity as it is shown on their website or from another approved source.
- Place located inside another Place. Append to the place name " ( "inside" other place name) ". (The WMEPH script will ignore the information inside the parenthesis and pull the correct harmonization information.)
Ex: Target's CVS Pharmacies are named CVS Pharmacy (inside Target)
- Gas Stations. Be sure to follow national guidance for how to name special cases. (Please, use a hyphen "-" to separate business names.)
Address.
A full, complete address must be present; a "City" name must be present.
- For RPPs, use the USPS mailing address city for the "City" name.
- For all others places (PPs, APs, and PLAs,) the "City" name, as well as the rest of the address, is determined by the business or entity. Use whatever address it identifies on the official or claimed website.
Category.
- Please consult your group leader if you have questions on which category to use.
- Link to SER's local guidance for category selection. https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Places#Multiple_categories

Telephone Number.
Telephone numbers must be entered in one of these formats: (XXX) XXX-XXXX or XXX-XXX-XXXX
Website.
Verify that the website is owned by the correct business or entity. (A facebook page may only be used if the business does not have its own listing and the facebook page is not "Unclaimed".)
Use the URL that will take you directly to the homepage for the business or entity.
- For public schools, enter the URL provided by the school. (They make extensive efforts to keep their naming schemes.)
- For Businesses with multiple locations (chains or franchises e.g.), please use the simplest URL that will get you to the main or general business webpage. (Please do not link directly to the a location-specific page.)
- Verify that a URL works before adding it to a place in WME.
Services.
Please review the list of services, shown in WME, for a place AND select all those which apply.
Open Hours.
- If hours include words (and cannot be put here), please note what they are in the Description.

Residential Place Points (RPP)
REITERATE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL RPP MAPPING
Place Update Requests (PUR)
IMPORTANT: When editing a PUR, at a minimum, Zoom in to Level 7 (10m or 50').

Run the WME Place Harmonizer script to make sure everything is correct and entered.
per SER guidance (Go beyond green!)
Map Problems (MP)
- Bring PLAs to region standards before approving and closing the MP.
Parking Lot Areas (PLA)
[Places/Parking lot|https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Places/Parking_lot]
SEGMENT EDITING GUIDANCE
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.
Parking Lot Roads (PLRs)
- No u-turns are placed on PLRs. Please do not add them to gas stations PLRs or PLRs within a PLA.
- Follow all other guidance in the SER standard for adding PLR’s from the Wazeopedia.
Driveways
- Add driveways only if needed to support RPP routing.
Toll roads
Regardless of rank, Do not alter any toll road segments without first consulting with your group leader. (Requests will be escalated to MR leadership.) |
Toll roads have pricing contained in price files that are separate from WME but linked through segment and node IDs. If any of these IDs or their order are changed through cutting, merging, disconnection or deletion, the toll price file will not work. Much more detailed information is in the Waze Wiki for Tolls. https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Toll#Prices
Segment Lock Level
The entire Southeast region (SER) observes the segment locking standards in the chart below.
There are some cases that do not adhere to this standard, such as any theme park type areas in Orlando (5/6). Further, all gates at gated communities / private installation should be locked to at least 5.
Segment Type | Default locks |
---|---|
Freeway | 5 |
Ramp | 5 |
Major Highway | 5 |
Minor Highway | 4 |
Primary Street | 3 |
Street | 1 |
• • • • Ferry • • • • | 5 |
|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| | 2 |
Other roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, incorrect images, etc.).
If you believe a segment lock level is incorrect, please talk to your group leader before making any changes.
When you have finished editing a segment, please ensure the lock level is set correctly. If you are unable to lock it to that level, please lock it as high as you can and ask your group leader to up-lock or raise the segment lock to the correct level.
BEYOND MAP RAID SCOPE
Any major issues that need to be addressed will be followed up on by local editors after the MapRaid's conclusion. Please notify your group leader of any large issues you find.
xxxxx xxxxx
Regaxxxxxx ank, Do not xxxxxxx without first consulting with your group leader. (Requests will be escalated to MR leadership.) |

Tools & Scripts
Many scripts and extensions exist which help editors make quality changes to the map with greater ease. (The USA wiki Script page lists and explains the features of some of the most popular ones available.) The MR committee suggests that each editor install and enable the following tools and scripts for editing assistance to meet the MR goals. Community Plugins, Extensions and Tools
Tools
- A script manager is required. Recommend the installation of TamperMonkey. (Some scripts do not work with the current version of GreaseMonkey.)
- Recommend the installation of Toolbox Extension for Chrome in lieu of script.

- Adding PLR's and Driveways to enhance RPP routing is within. Any other cases? All?
- Limiting shopping mall editing to addressing PP's for the stores within? (No consensus yet on how to deploy Pedestrian Paths in SER.)
CLARIFY/FURTHER DEFINE GUIDANCE:
- Area places - which are approx building footprint (Shopping mall, ..................)? Which are to fence and/or parcel boundaries? (Gas stations, Campuses (School, Universities, Hospitals..............)?
- Multiple Entry Points for SER? - national guidance has been published.
Items to Highlight on MR wiki (important to place editing
- Which specific Services, if any?
NEW guidance
- 3rd party import descriptions? To trim or not to trim?
NEW capability
- Add Form Filler script to drive gsheet which lists issues found outside scope of MR? (Resource already identified/volunteered)
Things to highlight in MR wiki which are Beyond the Scope of MR
- No new PLAs
- No URs (Local Editors)
- No Mexico Beach editing (Group xxx ??)
- No Functional Class editing All are current and set per Alabama standards.
