Welcome, NY Wazers! (Please note that this page is a work in progress, and owes much to other pages here from which the general format was copied!)
If you are an editor or area manager working in the state of New York, please update this Wiki with the areas where you are working! Please feel free to contact me at the forum using the link below if you have questions about this page, about editing, or about life in general. :)

Current Projects
03MAR2012: I've added this new section to our Wiki for us to show what areas or projects we're currently working on. This way, we can avoid duplication of efforts by keeping each other informed of what we're doing. In this section, please add your name, where you're from (if you so desire), and your current project(s), including permalink(s).

NY Road Classification Guide
Some other states have begun using their DOT Functional Classification chart as a means of determining road types. However, New York is still using the following guidelines, based on the road's nomenclature and setup. We start with this basic matrix:
- Limited-access highways of significant length and/or with 3 or more interchanges: Freeway
- US Routes: Major Highway
- NY State Routes: Minor Highway
- County Routes: Primary Street
- Main urban thoroughfares that are not classified above: Primary Street
- Most other roads not mentioned above: Street
- Parking Lot Roads, Dirt Roads, etc. -- should be obvious
- For multiplexed routes, use the type of the higher (or highest) route on the segment (for example: where US-20 and SR-5 are multiplexed, use Major Highway instead of Minor Highway).
From this point, roads may be adjusted up or down the scale as indicated by the road's setup and usage. Examples:
- Most of SR-17 from Binghamton to Harriman is fully limited access; it is therefore typed as Freeway (except for one 5½-mile stretch of at-grade intersections between Sanford and Hancock, where it is typed Major Highway).
- US-11 north of Syracuse has largely been supplanted as a thoroughfare by I-81, and there are places where it is more advisable for it to be typed as Minor rather than Major.
- CR-56 in Steuben County is barely wide enough for two cars, has no appreciable shoulders, and is only rarely used; based on that, its type was downgraded to Street.
If you are having difficulty in determining what road type a particular section should have, feel free to contact NY's resident Country Manager and Waze Champ, Spil.
Interstates and Major Freeways
Primary issues for Interstate and Major Highway work
- remove excess junction nodes (those not at intersections or at city-name changes)
- inspect and correct connectivity of necessary junctions
- update highway and ramp segment "road types"
- inspect and correct overpasses/underpasses to ensure that the segments are on different levels and do not have a junction node where they meet
- update all segment "Street Names" and "Alternate Names" (removing any duplicate alternates) in accordance with the standards published in the Wiki, but with certain exceptions as noted below-- when in doubt, follow these examples:
- NON-SPLIT HIGHWAYS/STREETS/ROADS (two-way segments):
- US Routes: US-20
- NY State Routes: SR-60
- County Roads/Routes/Highways: CR-70A
- SPLIT HIGHWAYS (one-way segments):
- I-481 N -- I-481 S
- US-219 N -- US-219 S
- SR-17 E -- SR-17 W
- ONRAMPS:
- to I-81 N / Watertown
- to I-86 E / Corning / Binghamton
- Note: two-way ramp segments should not be named; the TTS directions will then properly use the name for the next named street on its route.
- OFFRAMPS:
- numbered exits: Exit 26: Olean
- numbered exits with multiple names: Exit 59: Dunkirk / Fredonia
- non-numbered exits: Exit to SR-39 / Springville
- Note: it is permissible to add route numbers on numbered exits; however, this is not essential, and if the name becomes too long, the TTS may cause extra confusion when repeating the information several times. Generally, the exit number and city name(s) on the sign are sufficient for the ramp name.
- NON-SPLIT HIGHWAYS/STREETS/ROADS (two-way segments):
