City Naming in Pennsylvania
If a township and a Borough/City share the same name, the Township should get the qualifier.
- Tionesta Township and Tionesta Borough in Forest County.
- Tionesta Borough would be Tionesta
- Tioneta Township would be Smith Twp
If 2 or more townships have the same name but are in different counties, they should both have the county appended to the name.
- Rockland, Berks
- Rockland, Venango
If there is a combination of the above 2 rules occurs, the naming should use both standards. example:
- Union Twp, Franklin
- Union, Franklin
- Union, Snyder.
Exception if the municipality is in a county of the same name - it should be presented without qualifier e.g. Butler city in Butler county, York city in York county. Additionally, if there is a like named township, it should also be presented without the county - Butler Twp, York Twp. Other exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Pennsylvania State Managers. Please consult with them prior to seeding or requesting a new city name.
