The Waze client app has no option for indicating that you are parked, or paused in your travels. This may be while

  • you stop at shops
  • stop at a petrol station
  • have arrived at your destination
  • are planning a trip

As a result Waze will send out notifications of heavy traffic, or complete standstills on the roads nearest you. The only way to prevent this is to stop the Waze app, which isn't always convenient.

As well as cluttering wazers devices with false warnings, the false traffic messages can lead to bad routing decisions as Waze will try and route around the non-existent traffic jams. It also leads to false readings on the average speeds of roads, which also leads to bad routing decisions.

These messages also give rise to privacy issues as they leak information about the location of wazers homes and workplaces.

Waze recently introduced a sophisticated motion-detection algorithm, so that traffic notifications are only displayed when the vehicle is stationery. So there is already code that can be used to automatically disable a pause and resume normal use.

What is required is some simple method where wazers can indicate to their client device that they are parked (a pause button), and not stuck in traffic.
