This new page is currently undergoing modifications. The information presented should be considered a draft, not yet ready for use. Content is being prepared by one or more users. Do not make any changes before you post a message in this forum. |
This page is being developed as a template for all USA state pages. Current pages being considered as a guideline for some or all of their content include:
I have made the comments appear on the standard page for easy review by all concerned. They will stay in the final template as editor comments, not to be visible on the final page when read normally.
<!--Instructions to the editor first setting up this template for STATENAME.
1. Copy the content of this page under edit mode.
2. If the page STATENAME currently exists, paste this content on a temporary page, otherwise paste it on the STATENAME page.
3. Globally search and replace STATENAME with the name of the target state.
4. Review the notes in edit mode and make the appropriate changes noted.
5. Integrate any content from a current state page as needed.
6. Review the final proposed page with other editors in your state.
7. Resist moving sections around in this template because all states are being set up this same way. If necessary add subsections to current sections. New sections should be reviewed with other state editors to keep the template as similar as possible.-->
This page serves as a key resource for editors in STATENAME. Review all the sections to better understand how the guidelines for this state might deviate from the overall USA or worldwide guidelines. If you have questions refer to the forum links below.
Cities and towns
What is the primary goal of this section? Are there states with cities that are unnamed? Or is this more about when and how to name CDPs? Either way we should explain why this section is here since we are not just listing city names for the sake of listing them. One example is Connecticut/Cities and towns. |
There are 169 cities and towns in the state. See STATENAME/Cities and towns for proper naming information.
Major roads
The state specific page for Roads by type (third link below) does not appear to be active for most states and would be removed for states that don't have it. One example is Connecticut/Roads by type |
STATENAME follows the general road naming and type guidelines of the USA. See Road names/USA, Road types/USA and STATENAME/Roads by type.
Places
If a state has specific guidelines different from the rest of the country, it would be noted here. |
<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME.-->
STATENAME follows the USA standard for Places. It is recommended that the guidelines in that page are not deviated unless discussed in the state forum linked below.
Major construction projects
Some states have a full subpage on tracking construction projects and others just link to the state's DOT.gov page. |
<!--Replace content with applicable material for state.-->
The major construction projects for STATENAME can be found on this DOT web page.
Special roads
This appears to be more of a list of editing manual page links. There are others like the Junction Style Guide and the linked pages inside it that we might want to reference as well. |
<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME.-->
STATENAME follows the standard USA guidelines for all of the following special road types.
- Divided highways and roadways
- Carpool, HOV, Transit lanes
- Roundabouts and traffic circles
- Cul-de-sac's
- Dirt roads
- Parking lot roads
- Toll roads
Non-drivable roads
Is this generally universal for all states? Can we link to the one page in the Wiki and only list deviations here? Note that some states like CT incorrectly guide editors NOT to map any of the non-drivable road types. |
<!--Modify details as applicable for STATENAME. Add links to the sections where the state specific guidelines may be different from the USA guidelines.-->
Review the guidelines for non-drivable roads to ensure compliance with the general guidelines.
Cameras
Because many states are different from each other, this section is very important to be covered uniquely for each state. |
Not every camera-looking device at an intersection is a speed or red light camera. Be sure to know your cameras before accepting new camera reports. Currently only the Waze client app can add cameras to the map. When adding a camera from the app, be sure to review the camera placement recommendations.
Speed cameras
Speed cameras are (legal/illegal) in STATENAME. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle when it passes by at too high a speed. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.
Red light cameras
Red light cameras are (legal/illegal) in STATENAME. These cameras take a photograph of a vehicle that enters an intersection after the light is red. Refer to the Cameras page for specific information.
<!--Some states have additional regulations or specific localities that relate to speed and red light cameras. That information should be added here.-->
To do list
Some states have it and others don't. I recommend we always make it an entire subpage. The subpage would then break out the different types of to do lists like places, FC updates, etc. That allows this page to stay clean and consistent and we could also have a general to do link for each state from a single USA page if needed. |
If you are an active editor in this state, consider reviewing the "to do" list for the state at STATENAME/To do list.
Mapping resources
Virtually every state has links to other resources. Now some states have links to general editing instructions. I recommend we only have the state pages link to an editing manual page where we can ensure the best guidelines are always updated on that page for all states. If that current page needs updating, then let's update it. |
Before editing the maps in STATENAME, but sure to fully review and understand the editing manual.
The following links can be helpful when editing STATENAME.

Forum
Most states have this already, so it should be easy to match for all states. |
The Waze forum is a great place to find answers to previously asked questions and also a place to ask new ones. Below is a link to the forum specific to STATENAME as well as the main USA forum page.
