Welcome
Welcome to the Alabama and Northwest Florida MapRaid! We thank you for registering and do appreciate whatever your contributions, whether many or few, you will make towards improving the map throughout this area in the Southeast region (SER) of Waze USA.
A MapRaid (or MR) brings editors together from across the community to focus their efforts on a defined map area for a short burst of editing activity. All participating editors are granted the ability to edit within the entire MR area. Each of you will assigned to a group with a subset of the MR area and its own list of priorities. It will be your task to work with your group to help address those objectives!
Please read this entire MapRaid wiki. If you are uncertain or have questions about how to address something you see on the map, please ask your group leader.
Mission & Priorities
We want to make sure waze has the best experience for the drivers, so finding a place in search and getting to their destination accurately is extremely important!
The primary goal for this MapRaid is to as much as possible update all places and resolve existing place issues.
The number 1 task is to be detailed and make sure the places are correct: having all the correct information in them and stop points are in the correct location.
- Places.
- Place Update Requests (PURs).
- Parking Lot Roads (PLRs). If you wish to add PLR(s) to a parking lot, first YOU MUST address/fix all places which will use or be serviced by those PLR’s.
- Map Problems.
- Parking Lot Areas (PLAs). Last after all above have been addressed.

WME Basics
Editor Visibility
- While editing in the raid area, please make yourself visible to other editors.
- Enable the Live users layer so you can see other editors in your immediate area.
Level-Based Editing Restrictions
Level 1 and Level 2 editor map editing restrictions remain in effect during the raid.
Local Guidance
PLACES
SER follows the national Places guidance except where noted below.
Places NOT mapped
(Any places from this list which are mapped are locked to level 5 or higher. For ex., there are some rivers mapped as requested by Waze staff.)
- interchanges/junctions
- water of any kind
- islands
- beaches
- toll plazas
Mapping Style (Area or Point)
The following places are mapped as place points (PPs) or area places (APs), in exception to national guidance:
Place type | Mapping Style | Place type | Mapping Style | |
---|---|---|---|---|
City Hall | Area Place | Campground | Point Place | |
Government Buildings | Area Place | Car Dealership | Point Place | |
Library | Area Place | RV Park | Point Place | |
Museum | Area Place | |||
Sports Court | Area Place |
All Area Places (APs), except gas stations, are mapped as basic polygons reflecting the building footprint. Gas stations are mapped to the fenceline or parcel boundaries.
Place Details
Especially for this MapRaid, every place should have as much detail completed as possible.
Name.
For a place within a place, append to the place name " ( "inside" other place name) ". Set the place point at the building entrance. (WMEPH will ignore the information inside the parenthesis and pull the correct harmonization information.)
Address.
A full, complete address must be present and a "City" name is required.
- For RPPs, use the USPS mailing address city for the "City" name. For businesses,
- For all others places (PPs, APs, and PLAs,) the "City" name, as well as the rest of the address, is determined by the business or entity. Use whatever address it identifies on the official or claimed website.
Category.
- SER has local guidance for category selection. (Consult your group leader is you need assistance.)
Description.
- For locations with different hours of operation for service types (i.e. lobby vs. drive-thru), use the set with the longest duration for the place's open hours and write the other hours into the description.
Lock Levels.
Place type | Lock Level |
---|---|
Airports & their PLAs | 5 |
Arenas | 5 |
Hospitals | 5 |
Park & Ride Lots | 5 |
Universities / Colleges | 5 |
Urgent Care | 5 |
All Other Places (incl. PPs, APs, PLAs, RPPs) | 3 |
(Minimum Requirements for Locking. Places may be locked only after the following information, at a minimum, is present: 1) correct name, 2) correct, complete address, 3) correct category, and 4) External Provider (google link), if one exists.)
Website.
Services.
Place Update Requests (PURs)
IMPORTANT Please do not work Place Update Requests (PUR) zoomed all the way out. Please zoom in to the place, make sure it's in the correct spot, and run the WME Place Harmonizer script to make sure everything is correct and entered. Clear all PURs and make sure all information is correct in the places you are working per SER guidance and that you are using WMEPH. (Make it green!)
Parking Lot Roads (PLRs)
Follow the SER standard for adding PLR’s from the Wazeopedia.
Map Problems (MPs)
Bring PLAs to region standards before approving and closing the MP.
Segment Lock Levels
The entire Southeast region (SER) observes the segment locking standards in the chart below.
There are some cases that do not adhere to this standard, such as any theme park type areas in Orlando (5/6). Further, all gates at gated communities / private installation should be locked to at least 5.
Segment Type | Default locks |
---|---|
Freeway | 5 |
Ramp | 5 |
Major Highway | 5 |
Minor Highway | 4 |
Primary Street | 3 |
Street | 1 |
• • • • Ferry • • • • | 5 |
|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| | 2 |
Other roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, incorrect images, etc.). If you believe a lock level is incorrect, please talk to your group leader before making any changes.
When you have finished editing a segment, please ensure the lock level is set correctly. If you are unable to lock it to that level, please lock it as high as you can and ask your group leader to up-lock or raise the segment lock to the correct level.
Parking Lot Areas (PLAs)
Issues beyond Scope of MapRaid
Any major issues that need to be addressed will be followed up on by local editors after the MapRaid's conclusion. Please notify your group leader of any large issues you find.

Tools and scripts
There are many scripts and extensions that editors use to assist with editing that not only make some jobs easier, but also verify what we do is correct. The use of these scripts is encouraged and those listed below are ones you should install, at a minimum.
You will need to install a browser extension to manage the additional scripts. Some scripts do not work with the current version of GreaseMonkey so we recommend installation of TamperMonkey.
