Segments and Nodes

What is a segment?
In geometry, a line segment is a part of a line that is bounded by two end points.
In the Waze map editor, Cartouche, we use segments in order to draw new roads, as the definition above explained, that segment has to be bounded by two end points, what we call a Node.
Types of segments (Highways)
Highways
In the US we can find diferent types of highways, we set the segment according to the road size.
Freeway 
A freeway is a highway with separated lanes, and without traffic lights or stop signs.
Only interchanges (ramps) and other types of highwats are used for entering or exiting a freeway.
Roads such as streets, primary streets etc. can't be connected.
Major Highway 
Major highways have two one way roads, their access and exits could be a ramp or a junction.
In the picture you can see a combination of both: some of the turns are controlled by traffic lights and some are by ramps.

Minor Highway 
A minor highway is a narrow intercity road, has only junctions. usually has one lane on each direction, and is not separated.
Highways usually have intersections but there are certain cases in which highways have traffic lights.
Ramp 
Ramps are used to exit or enter a freeway or a major highway.
Streets
Also in a city we can find different types of streets:
Primary Street 
A primary street is usually a two ways road with more than one lane to each direction, it doesn't have a separation wall. In order to enter or exit that kind of road we use junctions.
Street 
Street is a small one or two ways road, small junctions are used to enter or exit from it.
Service Road 
Service roads are separated slow-speeds drivable roads, parallel to freeways/highways used as access points to buildings (usually used to reach gas stations).

Dirt Roads/ 4x4 trails
Dirt roads and 4x4 trails are non paved roads.
Parking lot Road
Very similar to the service road, a parking lot road is a dedicated road to reach a parking lot.
Walking Trail
Walking trails is a road with a dirt surface used for travel.
Pedestrian Boardwalk
Very similar to the walking trail, we can find pedestrian boardwalk in cities, and along beaches.
Stairway
Stairways are used in cities with different level of height in order to pass from one street to other.
Types of segments (Roundabouts)
Roundabouts 
Roundabouts have few principals:
The first one, each node on the roundabout can only be connected to no more than one segment.
Each connection has a spectrum that exists in order to notify the Client on how to define the message (Go straight, exit through the 2nd / 3rd / 4th exit).

The system will include the radius border from the center and notify the user accordingly.
Connecting Segments
Highway - Freeways
The only way to exit or enter a freeway is through a ramp.
Highway - Major Highway
Junctions and Ramps could be used in order to enter or exit a Major Highway.
Highway - Minor Highway
Highways usually have intersections but there are certain cases in which highways have traffic lights.
Streets and Primary street
Streets and Primary streets can be connected to each other.
