-->Cute intro like <span style="background: lightgray;">We're heading down to the shore early this season.</span> MapRaid New Jersey May 2015 will be 27 May 2015 through 3 June 2015. Intro with some clues about population/road density <span style="background: lightgray;">This map raid region is affectionately known as "The Shore" in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Salt air, cool summer breezes and endless boardwalk amusements for young and old bring visitors from the northeastern United States and Canada.  Wintertime population is a little over a million, but summertime population is eight to ten times that.</span> Fun exhortation: <span style="background: lightgray;">Let's raid the map to help Wazers find their favorite places and find better ways to get to them this summer and every summer!</span><!--

Mission
Mission
Our primary mission is to fix what is broken as well as fine tune what is already working. This will be handled through a variety of methods:
Our primary mission will be to handle the URs, and PURs, followed by Place validation, and general map verification.
* Handling URs, PURs, and MPs (and fixing already approved places)
* Fixing streets (correcting elevation, turns, extra nodes, alternate names, etc)
* Routing corrections (usually found in URs or by randomly attempting to route between points and looking for irregularities)
* FC errors (but do not downgrade without getting local guidance! See FC warning immediately below.) - FC will mostly be handled by rank 5/6 editors in this raid.

Local Hosts
Local Hosts
Your local hosts are the experts on how the guidance you see on this page applies to the MapRaid area. If the guidelines are not clear, please check with them or with anyone else they might designate during the raid.

Road Types
ialangford - South Carolina SM
Please do not change the types of roads without getting appropriate guidance:
* Freeways
* Ramps
* Major Highways
* Minor Highways
* Primary Streets
Some changes to road types could mess up continuity and distort routing.  See the section below on road names, types, and FC for more information

Mapraid UR Rules
We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 4 days.

<!-- <br />
Some URs are meant to stay open for a while.  Please contact the editor working on them before closing.  Some examples are:
* The UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [xxx]. Unless -- it is a [CLOSURE] that has already passed. The URO+ extension makes it easy to spot these
** Very old [CLOSURE] URs might be ripe for closure -- check carefully.
* The UR contains a request from the editor not to close it.
* There is clearly communication going on between the reporter and one or more editors.

Please do not alter any of the following roads:
Please Do Not Mass-Edit
*I-275 in Tampa, FL
*US-19 in Clearwater/St.Pete, FL area
*Selmon Expressway in Tampa, FL
*I-4 anywhere in South Carolina
*I-595 in Broward County / S Fl
*I-95 in Broward County / S Fl
*Dolphin Expressway in Dade County / S Fl
*Palmetto Expressway in Dade County / S Fl

If you think you have found an issue for any of the above, please consult with a Local Host PRIOR to any changes. All of these roads are under heavy construction, or have complex restrictions.
Do not perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. Specifically, avoid the Select Entire Street button completely. Doing so makes it difficult to tell who fixed what parts of the map to solve different URs. While we recognize that sometimes a solution might involve fixing a road name over an entire section of road or dividing/undividing it, for example, we ask that you defer these updates toward the end of the raid.
-->

Please do not alter any of the following road types without first consulting a Local Host (unless changes are being made to match Functional Classification (FC)):  Freeway, Ramp, Major Highway, minor Highway, Primary Street. You may edit these roads, but do not change the type of the segment (excluding FC work).  Confirmation should be obtained before making changes to any of these road types that go against FC.
Level 5,6 Locks
Please do not mass-edit Do not perform edits which will affect large numbers of segments at once. The edit history of segments is highly valuable in the process of solving URs. Mass editing effectively mass erases this history, permanently.
Level 5 and 6 locks usually indicate that an unorthodox treatment to the map for those segments was necessary. They are also used for Freeway segments that we believe are accurate and up-to-date with the best information available at the current time. Please check with local editors before making any changes to these segments. Consider use WME Color Highlights or WME Toolbox extensions to highlight L5- and L6-locked segments.

Anything locked at 5 or 6? Please check with a local editor before making changes.<br />
Micro-Doglegs
If you are a rank 5 or 6 editor - consider keeping highlights active for locks 5 and 6.

Close nodes We make extensive use of the " micro-dogleg" technique, where a geometry node is carefully placed, at full zoom, directly next to a junction node, in order to set the angle to create a desired Turn/Stay/Exit prompt. Please watch for these if you move any junction node, and be sure to recreate the same angle at the new location.
We utilize these extensively throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions based on the driving experience approaching many junctions, regardless of the angle any road might depart at. Be sure to zoom in really close at each junction where there might be a question about its geometry or routing to check for a micro-dogleg.

Functional Classification
Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)
Functional Class: You can get the most recent FC maps directly from the SCDOT website or in this Google Drive folder.

In the United States, we set our road types using a national standard called Functional Classification (FC). You can read a detailed explanation in our Road Type Wiki

SC DOT functional classification classifies roads as
*An Interstate, Freeway, or Expressway is a Freeway.
*A Principal Arterial is a Major Highway.
*A US Highway (US-##) classified as a Minor Arterial is a Major Highway.
*A Minor Arterial is a Minor Highway.
*A State Highway (SC-##) classified as a Collector is a Minor Highway.
*A Major or Minor Collector is a Primary Street.
*All other roads are to be classified as Street.

Road Locking Standard
SC

<!-- ===Elevation===
In general, all freeways should have an elevation of ground.  Roads running over or under the freeways will have an elevation of +1 or -1.  Where two freeways cross, the overpass should generally have +1 elevation. More complicated junctions may need more complicated treatment; apply the principal of "freeway defines ground level whenever possible" and keep elevations as sensible as possible. Remember that this region is not very hilly.
-->

UR & MP Guidance
Responding to Update Requests (URs), Place Update Requests (PURs), and Map Problems (MPs) will be the primary focus of the MapRaid teams. Please make sure to follow the guidance on dealing with URs, PURs, and MPs as they are clearly explained in the UR wiki page. Be especially careful to always leave a comment when closing a UR to explain why you are closing it, or how you fixed it. If there is no problem with the map to fix, don't mark it as solved, mark it as "Not Identified".<br />

Our only variation for the MapRaid from the general guidance on handling URs, is that we are reducing the 7 day wait periods to 4 days. If you need to ask the reporter a question, you still must comment and wait 4 days, then if no response, put another comment as to why you are closing the UR before closing as "Not Identified". If you are able to fully diagnose and fix the problem, then comment what the fix was, and close it as "Solved".

We will not be sending reminder comments after the 4 days. We send one comment asking for info, if there is no response after 4 days, close the UR. Please try to solve the UR, if that's not possible mark it as Not Identified. (We should still be sending a closing comment before closing, and it's OK to send follow up comments if you need additional information after the first response.)

Please keep UR response comments to a minimum, short and to the point. Aim for no more than 3-4 lines total. The UrComments script already has a long list of canned UR responses which have been vetted by a group of senior editors.

<br />

Place Editing
Places from both editors and trusted users have become a major issue. Misspelled names, wrong categories, missing addresses (EVERY business place should have an address!!), poor location, and incorrectly assigned photos are all over the map. Use the powerful Place Browser (link below) and the information on the Place editing section of the Southeast wiki to get these places corrected.

The following exceptions to the national guidance are NOT mapped in SC:

*interchanges/junctions
*water (if a major body of water that is missing from the map, ask the RC or an SM)
*islands
*beaches
*toll plazas

<!-- Exceptions to a point or area that ARE mapped in the southeast:
*Post Office is an area
*Car Dealership is always a point
-->

For Place Harmonization, please click here!

Please use good judgement when approving photos. Any photo which has nothing to do with the actual place, reject. This is including, but not limited to body parts, car parts, bathrooms, children, & animals. If you're not sure, please ask one of the senior editors.

Gas Stations<br>
Gas Stations should be locked to level 3 but, only after all data fields in the gas station have been filled. At least ensure that Brand, Name and Address have information. Remember to ask a local host if you need help identifying gas station information.

For editors below rank 3, once you have completely filled out a gas station with the minimum required information, please lock to your level and then ask for a lock request.

Finally, DO NOT USE THE BRAND "UNBRANDED". If it is a no brand gas station, just leave the brand field blank.

Places Locking Standard
*Lock at rank 5: hospitals, universities, park and ride lots, arenas, airports.
*Lock at 3: any other place that has at least a correct category, correct name, and correct address with house number..
*If you cannot lock high enough because of rank, lock as high as you can, and get help from a higher-ranked editor to lock properly.  You can keep a personal list of Permalinks to share with the other editor.

Toll Roads
All toll roads in South Carolina are properly marked. DO NOT enable/disable the toll road checkbox on any road that is a Major Highway or Freeway without checking with one of the local hosts.

Construction
<!-- status of FC implementation, if applicable -->

There may be some roads which are not on the editor, so if you see a missing road, see if there is an actual neighborhood by turning on the GPS tracks. There are always a large number of major construction projects in process. These construction projects can cause frequent intermittent road closures. Many closures change daily and cause great numbers of URs to appear. When handling URs in one of these areas, be aware that reports of "Turn not allowed", "Missing road", "Wrong driving direction" are common, but may not indicate a map problem that can be fixed, because the physical road situation will change before our edits can take effect.
We follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. FC-based upgrades have been completed xxx. In xxx, all yyy and zzz are set correctly but some roads that should be www might not be set correctly. If you find roads that seem to need to be reclassified, please work with one of the raid hosts.

U-turns
There are xxx diferent types of numbered routes in yyy
* Federal: I-195 E, US-9
* State: SR-35 S, SR-72
* County: CR-537, CR-4
When a segment has more than one name and/or more than one route designation, name it in a way that will be most useful to the wazer listening to navigational instructions. This means using the name that appears on the most frequently encountered signs. If the name on the signs changes very frequently, keep it consistant by using the most consistantly-used name. If both the name and the route designation consistantly appear on the same sign, use the name.All other names/route designations should be entered as alternate names. You can read more about this in Concurrent names on US roads.

In South Carolina, U-turns are allowed unless specifically denied by signage. In general we can confirm, lock or "harden" U-turns (click to remove the Purple question mark indicating a soft turn -- see the Wiki).
For more information on correct names and road types, please see Mapping resources below.

Special Road Types
Locking Standards
All your questions can be answered here concerning Alleys, Non-driveable, Emergency/DOT, Ferries, and Railroads: Special Roads
These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Higher level locks can be used in exceptional circumstances. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available. If the road should be locked above your editing level, be sure to request an appropriate lock. For more information, please see
<!-- substitute the name of the appropriate state, if appropriate
New Jersey Major Roads. -->
Places
<!-- check the local standard on this -->
* Complex, intricate, or otherwise critical Places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at least to Level X.
* Gas stations and other types of places fundamental to the functionality of the Waze app should also be locked at least to Level X, but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in. Remember to ask locals for help if needed.
* If you can't lock it to the correct level, lock it as high as you can and ask for help with the locks.

Cameras
For more information on Places editing in xxx, please read <!-- correct state places section New Jersey - Places -->.

Speed and red light cameras are illegal in South Carolina; do not approve any and remove any that have been approved.

Private Installations
Military Bases - Please contact txemt or driving79 if you need to update a military base in South Carolina.

Gated Neighborhoods - South Carolina maps gated neighborhoods with the resident approach. Meaning, map the neighborhood if you were a resident, and had access to the neighborhood if you were one. Please contact Local Hosts if you have any questions on how to map this correctly.

DO NOT MAP THE GUARD/GATE HOUSE AS A PLACE AREA OR POINT for a neighborhood.

Unlock and Lock Requests
Unlock and lock requests should be handled in your teams slack channel. Each team has at least one rank 5 editor, most have more.

Due to the close group and rapid time frame for editing, we can accomplish things much faster if we handle it all in-house. There is no need to post unlock requests to the forum for MapRaid! related edits.

Unlock requests should include the permalink preferably without layers, the changes you would like to make, and the reasoning behind the changes you'd like to make.
WME chat can also be used. The WME Chat addon is recommended.

We need local boots on the ground to check things. Please add requests for locals to go and scout things in person, as in on the road.

Some examples when this would be used include to check and see if:
* The street view is accurate,
* A road is really closed,
* A turn really allowed/prohibited, etc.

Revision as of 12:46, 22 May 2015

MapRaid participants: please do not edit in the area of the mapraid until the time given in the official announcement in the mapraid slack general channel. This will allow us to get good mapraid statistics.

This mapraid page is still under construction. Please be patient as we get it ready for the upcoming raid.

Cute intro like We're heading down to the shore early this season. MapRaid New Jersey May 2015 will be 27 May 2015 through 3 June 2015. Intro with some clues about population/road density This map raid region is affectionately known as "The Shore" in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Salt air, cool summer breezes and endless boardwalk amusements for young and old bring visitors from the northeastern United States and Canada. Wintertime population is a little over a million, but summertime population is eight to ten times that. Fun exhortation: Let's raid the map to help Wazers find their favorite places and find better ways to get to them this summer and every summer!

Mission

Our primary mission will be to handle the URs, and PURs, followed by Place validation, and general map verification.

Local Hosts

Your local hosts are the experts on how the guidance you see on this page applies to the MapRaid area. If the guidelines are not clear, please check with them or with anyone else they might designate during the raid.

Important!

Road Types

Please do not change the types of roads without getting appropriate guidance:

  • Freeways
  • Ramps
  • Major Highways
  • Minor Highways
  • Primary Streets

Some changes to road types could mess up continuity and distort routing. See the section below on road names, types, and FC for more information

Mapraid UR Rules

We will follow the usual US UR etiquette with one exception: During the Map raid, the wait time is reduced to 4 days.

Some URs are meant to stay open for a while. Please contact the editor working on them before closing. Some examples are:

  • The UR contains a tag such as [NOTE], [CLOSURE], or any other [xxx]. Unless -- it is a [CLOSURE] that has already passed. The URO+ extension makes it easy to spot these
    • Very old [CLOSURE] URs might be ripe for closure -- check carefully.
  • The UR contains a request from the editor not to close it.
  • There is clearly communication going on between the reporter and one or more editors.

Please Do Not Mass-Edit

Do not perform edits that affect large numbers of segments at once. Specifically, avoid the Select Entire Street button completely. Doing so makes it difficult to tell who fixed what parts of the map to solve different URs. While we recognize that sometimes a solution might involve fixing a road name over an entire section of road or dividing/undividing it, for example, we ask that you defer these updates toward the end of the raid.

Level 5,6 Locks

Level 5 and 6 locks usually indicate that an unorthodox treatment to the map for those segments was necessary. They are also used for Freeway segments that we believe are accurate and up-to-date with the best information available at the current time. Please check with local editors before making any changes to these segments. Consider use WME Color Highlights or WME Toolbox extensions to highlight L5- and L6-locked segments.

Micro-Doglegs

We utilize these extensively throughout the state to engineer turn- vs. stay/keep/exit instructions based on the driving experience approaching many junctions, regardless of the angle any road might depart at. Be sure to zoom in really close at each junction where there might be a question about its geometry or routing to check for a micro-dogleg.

Local Guidance

Road Types, Names, and Functional Classification (FC)

We follow the general US standards for road types based on the hybrid rule of FC and Route Type. FC-based upgrades have been completed xxx. In xxx, all yyy and zzz are set correctly but some roads that should be www might not be set correctly. If you find roads that seem to need to be reclassified, please work with one of the raid hosts.

There are xxx diferent types of numbered routes in yyy

  • Federal: I-195 E, US-9
  • State: SR-35 S, SR-72
  • County: CR-537, CR-4

When a segment has more than one name and/or more than one route designation, name it in a way that will be most useful to the wazer listening to navigational instructions. This means using the name that appears on the most frequently encountered signs. If the name on the signs changes very frequently, keep it consistant by using the most consistantly-used name. If both the name and the route designation consistantly appear on the same sign, use the name.All other names/route designations should be entered as alternate names. You can read more about this in Concurrent names on US roads.

For more information on correct names and road types, please see Mapping resources below.

Locking Standards

In South Carolina we have a set minimum standard for locking roads based on segment type. Any road of a certain segment type must be locked at least to the rank (level) in the chart below. Roads may be locked higher for protection and special situations (areas with construction, tricky design, frequent mistakes, imaging inaccuracies, and the like), but should not be locked lower.

A great time to implement these locks is while bringing the road types of an area into compliance with the current US road type standards (FC and highway systems). Lock the roads based on type after they've been set to current US road type standards.

South Carolina Minimum Locking Rank Standard
Segment Type Statewide
 Freeway  5
 Ramp  Highest rank of connected segments
 Major Highway  3
 Minor Highway  3
 Primary Street  1 (Auto)
 Street  1 (Auto)
 Private Road  1 (Auto)
 • • • • Ferry • • • •   5
 |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|  2

Note: Do Not Mass Edit just to update locks to these standards, these can be adjusted as you find them while editing other aspects of the segments such as FC, speed limits, naming, etc.

Some segments still warrant higher locks and care should be taken when setting segment lock to these standards to look for and protect these special setups with higher locks. Some examples; segments which are part of BDP, U-turn prevention, or using micro-doglegs, or other complex intersection setups.

These are the minimum lock level guidelines. Higher level locks can be used in exceptional circumstances. Before locking a road, be sure its information is complete and up to date, including house numbers, if available. If the road should be locked above your editing level, be sure to request an appropriate lock. For more information, please see

Places

  • Complex, intricate, or otherwise critical Places, such as airports, hospitals, police/fire departments, or many urban parks should be locked at least to Level X.
  • Gas stations and other types of places fundamental to the functionality of the Waze app should also be locked at least to Level X, but only after at least all the Brand, Name, and Address have been filled in. Remember to ask locals for help if needed.
  • If you can't lock it to the correct level, lock it as high as you can and ask for help with the locks.

For more information on Places editing in xxx, please read .

Communication

Communication will be handled primarily in #Slack Channels. There is a New Jersey Raid general channel and also a channel for each raid group. Please be sure to join the slack WazeMapRaid Team and join the channels for the specific MapRaid and group you are assigned to. If you are not already part of the WazeMapRaid slack team, Click here to get your Slack invitation. Be sure to choose WazeMapRaid to the MapRaid question. If you have trouble getting into the slack team and channels, please reach out to one of the MapRaid organizers.

WME chat can also be used. The WME Chat addon is recommended.

MapRaid Promotions

Some editors really let their bright side out, and let their community skills shine. This is even more evident in a concerted group effort with high-density editing like a MapRaid!. Editors of all ranks working closely with each other and the Champs, really lets us everyone get to know each other, and allows certain editors to be recognized for their skills and effort.

When the Champs see someone consistently editing well, interacting well with the community, and knowledgeable of the various details from the Wiki, they can issue promotions. This can be anything from the size of a managed area, to a rank increase, or even a new role.

Watch here for results of promotions during and after the raid.
