Development and management of toll roads in Malaysia are regulated by the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA). Toll collection and road maintenance are carried out by respective concessionaires.

In Malaysia, there are two toll systems; open and closed.

Closed-toll system highways are the ones which you take the Transit Ticket when you enter and pay toll (based on time and/or distance) when you exit, e.g. E6 North-South Expressway, Central Link (ELITE).

Open-toll system highways are the ones which you pay toll at toll booths on certain segments on the highway, e.g. E5 Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS).

There are also highways which employ both systems along its stretch, hence it shall be referred to as a Mixed-toll system when the entire highway stretch is mentioned. e.g. E1 North-South Expressway, Northern Route

Not all toll roads are Expressways and not all Expressways are toll roads.

Avoid Toll Roads Feature in Waze

In the Waze client app, you are able to manually select alternative toll-free routes from the menu after locking in your destination. Waze should give you a route which avoids closed-toll roads entirely and lets you enter open-toll roads with no toll booth segments. However, automatic toll-free route calculation via the Avoid toll roads feature has yet to be enabled for Malaysia, pending confirmation of toll road marking of the entire Malaysian expressway system by our map editors. Effective from July 02, 2013 the Avoid toll roads feature has been enabled for Malaysia.

A target of 90% marked toll roads must be achieved before informing Waze Support, so they can enable the Avoid toll roads feature in the client app, so Wazers can choose if they prefer toll-free routing on a regular basis.

You can now help Wazers in Malaysia to update new toll roads, with a new feature available today in the current map editor. Mark toll roads in your area by selecting road segments and flagging them Toll Road in segment properties.

Toll Road should be marked only on segments from toll booths (toll plazas) to the nearest free exit on both sides. Please use this method for both open-toll and closed-toll systems.
