New India Wiki is being built, For now, please see the pages about Waze in India in the old Wiki.

Road types

General Guidelines

  • The main roads in a district or town should at least be set to primary street.
  • If segments will be used for through-going traffic or for longer distances connecting districts or towns, they should at least be mH (minor Highway)
  • Main interconnecting roads with fast traffic should at least be MH (major Highway).

Always try to connect a road to a same level of road type or higher. Thus, Waze should be able to route from primary to primary (or higher), from minor to minor (or higher), from major to major (or higher), and from Freeway to Freeway. Another way of explaining this, is that you should be able to continuously drive on the same or higher type of segments for the routing engine to use that road type in the calculations.

This means we sometimes need to make small roads mH, for the possibility of calculating long distance routing.

Drivable

Freeway

 Freeway

Most expressways, the big National Highways.
Highways appointed by local champs to enable long routes.

Ramp

 Ramp

Connecting roads to and from highways
Not for at grade "street" connectors or turn lanes
Yield an "Exit to ..." in spoken navigation instructions
Used to indicate the direction, starting with >. Multiple destinations need to be separated by a space, slash (/), space.
Example: "> New Delhi / Chandigarh", will be voiced as "Exit to New Delhi, Chandigarh")

Major Highway

 Major Highway

Major Highways (MH) are used for National Highways (exception: inner roads within Indian Metro Cities)
Ring Roads around large cities

Minor Highway

 Minor Highway

Minor Highways (mH) are used for all State Highways
Arterial Roads, and inner highway roads within Indian Metro Cities
Roads used for through-going traffic or for longer distances connecting towns or villages

Primary Street

 Primary Street

Primary Streets (PS) are busy roads within Cities, and/or Feeder Roads to Arterial Roads

Street

 Street

Streets (ST) are normal roads, publicly accessible
Mostly used in (sub)urban areas, industrial zones, country roads.
If applicable check the unpaved attribute (instead of using the Off-road road type).

Alley

 Alley

Alleys are used for very narrow streets that are drive-able, but hard to access by car. For motorcycles, alleys are convenient for navigation.
See also in depth page on alleys in India.

Off-road

 Off-road

Was used in the past for roads that are (most often) not drivable, or need a 4x4 car to go over it.
Don't use this road type anymore but use another roadtype with attribute unpaved checked.

Parking Lot Road

 Parking Lot Road

Used for Petrol Stations, Car Parks

Private Road

 Private Road

Residential Roads, access is limited to a specific group of people. Private Road will not be used for through-going traffic.

Ferry

 • • • • Ferry • • • •

Non drivable

Walking Trail

 Walking Trail
Walking Trails (WT) are used for all 'roads' where cars are not able to drive but that can be a destination.

Pedestrian Boardwalk

 Pedestrian Boardwalk
Waze is only designed to use in a car, so Pedestrian Boardwalks (PB) are often not necessary.
PB's are designed for 'roads' that are inaccessible by car and that don't have a possible destination

Stairway

 Stairway

Not usually necessary

Railroad

 |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-| Railroad |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|-|
Elevation level as is. Do connect to drivable roads if they actually cross, and disallow turns to and from drivable roads.

Runway/Taxiway

 Runway/Taxiway

Airport runways and private airstrips.
The Runway/Taxiway type is for display only and must never connect to drivable road segments.
