Help:Use of outside media

Wazeopedia supports using embed external media from different sources including videos, slide decks, documents, etc.

The embed tool allows pasting plain URLs as well as embed codes (Iframes) inside the WYSIWYG editor or the source code editor, and lets the system embed the source if it is enabled. Here's a video showing all the capabilities of the embed feature:

How do I use the embed?

The embed feature works only for supported sources. These source, right now are the following:

• YouTube
• Waze LiveMap
• Google Docs - published & editing mode
• Google Slides - published & editing mode
• Google Sheets - published & editing mode
• Google Forms (only published)

Any web address from these sources pasted in the editor (both source editor and visual editor) will be embedded in the item.

How to embed a YouTube video in an article?

Pasting YouTube URLs will embed the video in the page. This will work either in the short version (youtu.be/...) or the long version of the addresses:

1. Copy the full URL from the address bar in your browser
2. Go to the page you want to embed the video in.
3. Click the editing link (either 'edit' or 'edit source')
4. Paste the URL
5. If you are using the visual editor (if you have clicked 'edit' above) than you will see a preview. If using the source editor, then you can click 'preview' button to see how it will look like.
6. Don't forget to save.

How to handle Google Docs, Slides and Forms?

Google Docs, Google Slides And Google forms are all supported. You can embed Google docs and slides both in editing state and in published state. Google forms embedding is enabled only in published states.

Published or editing?

You should choose embedding google drive resources in editing state only if you want other Wazers to enter information and only for a limited period of time

Example for editing mode

if you want other community memebers to fill some information in a Google spreadsheet, then you would like to embed it in editing mode.

In any other case it is recommended that you will embed external Google resources in published mode. This is done for a couple of reasons:

1. Published media supports better embedding in web pages, including support to mobile devices.
2. Your information will not be exposed to unmonitored changes by other users.

Embedding published items

First, publish your item. This can be done by clicking File > Publish to the web. Click here for more information about web publishing. Copy the embed link you have been given after publishing.

Then paste the URL in editing mode where you want the item to show.

Embedding unpublished items (editing mode)

First, go the document or the slide or sheet and, and copy the web address from the browser.

Then paste the URL in editing mode where you want the item to show.

Deleting the embedded media

Removing an embedded media can be done with the use of keyboard keys or by mouse. Enter editing mode in the requested page, then:

1. Mouse: click the embedded media preview, and in the dialog box opened click 'delete'. Then save the page.
2. Keyboard: navigate to the section with the use of arrow keys and when standing on the media press the delete key.

If you are using the source/code editor you can just delete the URL from the source and the media will not be shown.

Changing the source of the embed

You can replace the source of the embedded media by clicking the media while in editing state, and in the dialog box changing the URL to the requested one.

Can I change the layout of the embedded media?

You cannot change the embed parameters (width, height, etc.). This is done in order to provide standardisation upon different communities and items in Wazeopedia.

However, I a specific item needs a unique solution this can be done by nesting the embed in an HTML div container with the specific layout attributes. If you need help contact your community team on Waze in the Forum or by e-mail.

My media source is not supported. What should i do?

We can add more sources to the enabled external sources. Please contact the community team in Waze in the Forum or by e-mail.
