US Champ Status Is Not Permanent
Acting as a US Champ comes with benefits and also responsibilities. As several of these benefits and responsibilities can only be conferred on a limited number of leaders, the US Champ group is of limited size. The US Champ group is intended to include the top contributors to the management of the US editing community. Accordingly, when a Champ is not able to continue community management activities at a high level, such a Champ should consider stepping aside to allow others to fulfill the responsibilities of the US Champ group. A Champ may leave the US Champ group in several ways as described below.
Voluntary Resignation
When a US Champ is no longer willing or able to fulfill the responsibilities of being a Champ, such a Champ must resign from the US Champ group. Such a US Champ may transition to a Champ Emeritus role. A Champ Emeritus will be recognized for their previous contributions, expertise and knowledge, but will no longer be expected to regularly participate in the management of the US editing community. When a US Champ chooses to make this transition, they will reduce their editing rank to 5 and relinquish access to channels of communication that are intended for the limited Champ group. If a Champ Emeritus regains the ability and desire to fulfill the responsibilities of a US Champ, such an individual may be considered for renewed inclusion in the US Champ group as would any experienced editor.
Temporary Absence
When a US Champ is temporarily unable to fulfill the responsibilities of being a US Champ, the Champ should take a Leave of Absence (LOA). A US Champ may start a LOA at anytime by informing the US Champ community of the date that their LOA will begin. During a LOA period the Champ is reduced in rank to 5, but continues to have access to US Champ forums and documents. This enables the LOA Champ to continue to maintain their knowledge of current events in the US editing community to the extent that the LOA Champ is able. An LOA Champ is not considered a current US Champ as an LOA Champ is unable to keep abreast of all relevant events in the US editing community. Accordingly, a LOA Champ will not participate in voting activities within the US Champ group and will refrain from holding themselves out as a current US Champ before the editing community during the LOA period.
A LOA Champ may return to full current US Champ status upon reviewing the waze community information including the US Champs forums and documents to become aware of the significant events regarding the US editing community that occurred during their absence. Upon reviewing the current events in the waze community and resuming the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of a US Champ, a LOA Champ shall inform the US Champ community that the LOA Champ is ready to resume their US Champ responsibilities and will end their their LOA. A LOA Champ will be reinstated to full current US Champ status no earlier than ten days after informing the US Champ community of their intention to end their LOA.
A LOA may not extend for longer than one year. If a US Champ cannot fulfill their responsibilities for longer than a year, such a Champ must resign from the US Champs group and may transition to a Champ Emeritus role as discussed above.
Failure To Fulfill The Responsibilities Of A US Champ
Inactivity
A US Champ is expected to regularly participate in the management of the US editing community. If a US Champ fails to meaningfully contribute as a Champ for a 90 day period, the US Champ community will attempt to contact such an inactive Champ to determine if the inactive Champ can continue to fulfill their responsibilities as a US Champ. Meaningful contributions minimally include posting meaningful information in the forums or GHOs, but can also include assisting users in the WME chat, slack, or other communication methods used by the Champs' local community. When contacted regarding inactivity, a US Champ has three options 1) resignation from the US Champs group as discussed above, 2) taking a Leave of Absence as discussed above, or 3) resuming meaningful contributions as a US Champ. If an inactive Champ does not respond to attempts to contact them or otherwise does not elect to follow one of the above three options, such a Champ will be considered to have resigned their US Champ status.
Behavior Detrimental To The Waze Community
Under self-management the US Champ group is responsible for maintaining order and civility within the US editing community, including within the US Champ group itself. Should a US Champ find that another US Champ is behaving in a manner that is detrimental to waze or the waze community, a dialog should be initiated with the problem Champ to discuss the problem behavior.
If the problem behavior is not adequately explained and continues, a US Champ may propose to the US Champ community that a problem Champ should be expelled from the US Champ group if the problem behavior is not eliminated. Such a proposal shall be made in the US Champ forum. The proposal will set forth what behavior must be changed, will set forth who is engaging in the problem behavior, and will set forth why the behavior is detrimental to waze or the waze community. The proposing US Champ will make all reasonable efforts to ensure that the problem Champ is aware of the posted proposal.
If after three days the issue identified in the proposal is not resolved, any US Champ may initiate a vote regarding whether the problem Champ must change the problem behavior. A voting thread will be posted in the US Champs forum that specifies the US Champ that continues to conduct detrimental behavior and specifies the behavior to be changed. The voting period will remain open for seven days. If a majority of US Champs voting agree that the specified behavior must be changed, the specified US Champ shall comply and shall change behavior as specified. If a majority of US Champs voting do not agree that the specified behavior must be changed, the issue must be resolved by means other than expulsion.
If under the above procedure a specified US Champ is compelled to change behavior but fails to comply, then the specified US Champ may be expelled from the US Champ group. Once it is determined that there is enough evidence that the specified US Champ has failed to comply, any US Champ may initiate a vote using the following procedure. A poll will be posted in the US Champs forum. The first post of the poll will reference the prior vote agreeing to compel a change of behavior and will include an impartial representation of the evidence showing that the champ has failed to comply. The poll will include the following options: 1. I vote to expel champ, 2. I vote to retain champ, and 3. I abstain from the vote and relinquish the outcome to those voting either #1 or #2. The poll will remain open for seven days and will have the option enabled to allow voters to change their vote during this time. A minimum of 50% of the the Active US Champs must vote to make the poll valid. Upon a valid vote, at least 2/3 of the expel or retain votes must be expel to expel the specified US Champ. If the poll is valid and 2/3 of those voting expel or retain vote to expel, the specified US Champ shall be expelled from the US Champ group. If the poll is not valid or less than 2/3 of those voting expel or retain vote to expel, the specified US Champ will not thereafter be expelled for the specified behavior.
Upon expulsion access to US Champ forums and documents shall be revoked from the expelled US Champ. Unless otherwise agreed upon in specific circumstances, an expelled US Champ shall retain no management area upon expulsion from the US Champ group and shall have their editing rank reduced to rank 2. An expelled US Champ may reapply for management areas and increased editing rank in the US as would any US editor. If an expelled US Champ is also a Global Champ, the vote to expel the US Champ will be considered a recommendation from the US Champ group to waze and the Global Champ group to remove the editor's Global Champ status.
Malicious Conduct
US Champs are subject to the rules of conduct that apply to any waze user or editor. Harassing, offensive, threatening or vulgar communications by a US Champ in any communication channel intended for waze users or editors will be dealt with as would such conduct by any waze user and may result in the immediate revocation of posting rights and/or removal from waze community maintained communication forums. Intentional damage to the waze map, wiki or other waze community tools by a US Champ will be dealt with as would such conduct by any editor and may result in the immediate revocation of editing rights. Good faith differences in editing or management style are not intentional damage to the map. Incompatible differences in editing style or management style among US Champs shall be dealt with as discussed above regarding behavior detrimental to the waze community.
